It's graduation season. High school and college students are walking from one stage to another. Life transitions are uncertain, but with proper preparation young adults will succeed. Much of this success is due to teachers who gave wisdom, knowledge, and understanding to brilliant minds of promise.
Teachers come in many forms. Parents, friends, neighbors, ministers, and supervisors may impart knowledge throughout life. You may also learn from business associates, co-workers, and even the stranger you only meet once. I gained nuggets of wisdom from store associates, janitors, and coaches, each providing timely advice or direction when i needed it.
Consultants who provide professional development to employees are necessary teachers. These individuals provide knowledge through years of training, experience, and specialized certification. Their information and insight are invaluable to employees learning to do their assignments efficiently. I remember learning information technology at the beginning of my career before Microsoft was introduced to the world. The foundation for developing applications and writing code are tools I use today.
Companies will always need professional trainers because the marketplace is ever changing. New concepts and ideas spring forth and need to be taught as principles are adopted for proficient business applications. New technology and innovation are introduced to workers who apply these concepts to help companies achieve outcomes and reduce waste. None of this is possible without teachers who know how to reach adult learners.
Many people tell me they wish they had me for a teacher in high school. I am flattered, but also know teaching is a gift. Everyone does not possess it. Some are talented and know how to bring concepts to life, make them palatable, and stick in the minds of the hearers. I was paid a great compliment by a friend whom I taught negotiation strategy. He thanked me for the wisdom and told me what I taught helped him in business and life. He has retired now, but will never forget how I helped him and his team become their best.
Many of you have family members who are graduating from high school or college. As they reflect upon their educational journey, remember the great teachers, mentors, and professionals who helped you become equipped to soar into excellence.
